GLP-1 Guide

Who Should Consider a GLP-1? What a Local Physician Wants You to Know

About one in eight Americans now takes a GLP-1 medication. Dr. Edgardo Gil Maldonado of Cone Health Healthy Weight & Wellness in Greensboro recently answered patients' most common questions in the Triad Business Journal. Here are the key takeaways.

How GLP-1s work

GLP-1 medications copy hormones your body naturally releases after you eat. They quiet hunger and help you feel full sooner.

Dr. Gil Maldonado says obesity isn't a willpower problem. It's a chronic disease shaped by genetics, metabolism, and environment, and for some people the body's hunger signals are simply turned up too high.

Who qualifies for a GLP-1

  • Adults with a BMI of 30 or higher
  • Adults with a BMI of 27 or higher plus at least one weight-related health condition
  • People with type 2 diabetes, sleep apnea, or certain liver disease
  • People looking to lower their risk of heart attack and stroke

Who they're not for

GLP-1s are a long-term treatment, not a quick fix for dropping 10–15 pounds before an event. Weight often comes back after stopping, especially if you stop suddenly instead of tapering off.

What results look like

Most people lose 5–20% of their body weight, and some lose much more. Results vary with sleep, stress, diet, and genetics.

The people who do best treat the medication as a tool alongside lifestyle changes, not a stand-alone solution.

Side effects to know about

Nausea, constipation, and reflux are the most common, and they're often made worse by greasy food, sugar, alcohol, or not drinking enough water.

Without enough protein and strength training, muscle loss is a real risk. Bone density can also drop with rapid weight loss.

Cost and insurance coverage

Insurance coverage varies widely, and many employer plans limit it. Out-of-pocket prices have come down, but they can still run several hundred dollars a month.

The doctor also warns against "microdosing," which isn't backed by long-term data.

Where to start

Talk with your primary care provider or a medically supervised weight-management program about whether a GLP-1 is right for you.

Where MVM fits in

The doctor's message is clear: exercise isn't optional on a GLP-1. Protecting muscle and bone is essential. That's exactly what we do.

Your provider manages your medication. We help you keep the muscle, strength, and bone density you need for lasting results, with:

  • ARX adaptive strength training
  • Recovery sessions
  • Monthly 3D body scans
  • Bloodwork to track your progress

And it all happens in a private, appointment-only setting, so you never walk into a crowded gym.
